As the price of zinc rose from 3 per ton in 1872 to 27 per ton in 1888, zinc mining surpassed lead mining in the district and mines increased in depth from the water table, which occurred about 15 m below land surface, to more than 90 m below land surface, with zinc ore being more abundant below the water table (Gibson 1972).
